Default Title

a bazooka screen (aka bazooka tube / boil screen) is a stainless-steel mesh tube you thread onto your kettle or mash-tun outlet to filter hops, trub and grain bits as you transfer wort. It’s a quick, cheap, rigid alternative to a false bottom or hop spider. Beverage Elements+1

What it looks like / how it’s made

  • A short (~6–12″) stainless tube covered in woven stainless mesh with a ½″ (or other) threaded fitting so it screws onto a ball valve or bulkhead. Typical material: 304 stainless steel. Mesh/mesh-count varies (examples: “16 mesh”, ~300μm or similar). Ontario Beer Kegs+1

What it’s used for

  • Straining hops and hot-break/trub when you transfer from kettle to fermenter. Works well for whole-leaf hops and coarse solids; less effective for very fine pellet sludge. Brewers use it on kettles, mash tuns or on a dip-tube/ball-valve outlet.

  • Effective Filter for botanicals.

Pros

  • Cheap, simple and easy to fit or remove with the 1/" bsp male hose fitting. (fits into ball valves)

  • Large exposed area (long tube) keeps flow fast so it doesn’t slow transfers as much as tiny fine filters.  This item can be bent at the end to reduce length to suit your vessel  if required.
