Copper mesh is widely used in distilling for several important reasons, especially in reflux stills and some pot still setups:

1. Sulphide Removal (Cleaner Spirit)

• During fermentation and distillation, sulphur compounds (like hydrogen sulphide) can form, which cause off-flavours and unpleasant aromas (like rotten eggs).

• Copper mesh reacts with these sulphur compounds, binding and neutralising them, leaving a much cleaner, smoother spirit.

2. Increased Surface Area (Better Reflux)

• In a reflux column, packing with copper mesh greatly increases the surface area inside the column.

• This allows rising alcohol vapours to condense and re-evaporate repeatedly, increasing purity and producing higher-proof, cleaner alcohol.

3. Heat Distribution

• Copper is a very good conductor of heat. Having copper mesh in the column helps stabilise temperature fluctuations, improving separation efficiency.

4. Antimicrobial & Hygiene Benefits

• Copper naturally inhibits bacterial growth, which can help keep the still cleaner over time.

5. Adaptability

• Mesh is flexible and can be rolled or cut to fit different sizes of still columns.

👉 Common use: Copper mesh is often stuffed into the column of a reflux still, sometimes alternating with stainless steel packing, to balance purification and durability.
