The hops that were first planted in the Nelson area of New Zealand more than 150 yeas ago, thrived particularly well with the long hours of sunshine, interspersed with regular rainfall and a relative freedom from the winds. During the 1800's the remote, pristine and climatically favoured islands of New Zealand became a magnet for British, and Europeans of many nationalities.  They brought with them their lifestyles, and of course their hops.
