Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does it take to make a brew?

All beer packs will ferment at a different pace but generally speaking it takes about 1 week to ferment a standard brew and then we recommend leaving the beer another week to clear and mature before either bottling into beer bottles or into the Tap-A-Draft C02 system. The temperature at which you brew at will also affect the time span..the cooler the temperature the slower the beer will ferment. This is often an advantage (produces a better , smoother beer) compared with the results of fermenting at high temperatures. Fermentation times can vary for many different reasons including yeast used, quantity of ingredients and fermentation temperatures.

How long after bottling can I drink the beer?

There is no question that beer is greatly improved if it is allowed to mature for at least 3-4 weeks before drinking. If you bottle your beer into glass beer bottles, it takes a couple of weeks for the priming sugar to ferment in the bottle to give good carbonation and head retention. If you bottle into the tap-a-draft system you can also naturally prime and allow the beer to mature and improve in the 6 litre bottles and then use C02 to dispense when you are ready t o drink. The tap-a-draft system also allows to complete carbonating with Co2 if you wish. In any instance beer is always improved if it is allowed to mature a while before drinking.

Can I ferment different beer types using the same fermenter?

Yes...95% of all brewing today by home brewers is done in a closed airlocked fermenter. This is called bottom/closed fermenting and is a clean safe way of brewing beer in the home environment. With the exception of a few ale yeasts, most brewing yeasts are designed for closed fermentation. Virtually all Home brew beer packs and recipes on the market make use of standard fermentation equipment as supplied in our beer kits.

Why do you supply a syphon outfit as opposed to a tap from the bottom of the fermenter?

It has been a long established personal preference of ours (established through trial and error) that customers syphon their beer from the fermenter to avoid yeast disturbance rather than from bottling from a tap fitted from the base of the fermenter. Which ever system you use it is important to avoid splashing or aerating (oxidising) the beer as it is bottled (always fill from the bottom of the bottle). Our syphon outfit is designed to avoid sediment disturbance and avoid oxidisation. Racking (syphoning) wine off any sediments has long been established as a best practice in winemaking also.
